Building confident, capable leaders in disability support services
In 2024 The Bridge partnered with Chisholm’s Industry Solutions Team to deliver a practical, workplace-focused Certificate IV in Leadership and Management for current and emerging leaders. The course was designed to help staff strengthen their leadership capability, navigate the complexities of disability services, and support teams with confidence.
This partnership has empowered leaders to develop their skills whilst continuing to deliver a high standard of service for clients and the wider community.
The context
The Bridge is a purpose-driven, not-for-profit organisation supporting people with disabilities through community programs, employment services and social enterprises across Melbourne’s south east and northern suburbs.
As demand for personalised support continues to rise, The Bridge identified a need to further develop its leadership cohort. Leaders were managing increasingly complex situations, supporting diverse teams, and working within a rapidly evolving sector shaped by ongoing NDIS and service delivery expectations.
To ensure staff felt supported and equipped, The Bridge sought a development program that was practical, flexible, and aligned with the real need of their teams.
Learning and Development Partner of The Bridge, Jae Stephan, found that “the organisation needed a robust program that focused on the complexities of working with people in a rapidly changing sector.”
The approach
In partnership with The Bridge, we designed and delivered a tailored development program for the Certificate IV in Leadership & Management qualification. The program was created to build the leadership skills and confidence of staff through learning tailored to real workplace scenarios at The Bridge.
Delivered on site, the program strengthened learning by focusing on the real challenges current and emerging leaders face in the workplace. With flexibility a key priority, the delivery model supported continuity of business operations while enabling staff to learn, apply and reflect in real time.
Chisholm created a bespoke qualification that equipped staff with:
- tools to navigate challenging conversations;
- a deeper understanding of leadership styles and team dynamics;
- improved problem-solving and business awareness; and
- skills they could apply immediately in their roles.
Participants were supported throughout the program by Chisholm’s training team, who worked closely with The Bridge to ensure a smooth, responsive experience.
The impact
The program has delivered meaningful outcomes for The Bridge, its leaders, and the community they serve.
Jae says that the course helped support their leaders at a crucial time and is eager to see the team’s capability continue to grow since the completion of the course.
“Although the training at times challenged [our leaders], it allowed them to dig deep in a safe environment and learn more about themselves and the people they lead.”JaeThe Bridge
